Highlighting Changemakers during the Pandemic - Wesley Kuta

My name is Kuta Wesley from Kajiado, Kenya,  founder and team leader of Youth for Vision, promoting quality of life, health and well being with a specific emphasis on sexual reproductive health and rights, empowerment of women and girls, entrepreneurship and skills development. We donate food and clothing, offer counselling, help in the rehabilitation of drug addicts and hold sensitization campaigns. I am inspired by the idea that young people can rise up and defend their community over social issues, helping nurture a better tomorrow. In 2018 we received an award from the local government to recognise our work in cleaning up the slums and educating youths on the risks of crime.

We visit children, elderly and vulnerable people’s homes to give hope and light,  and primary schools to offer sanitary towels to girls who can't afford pads and help bridge gaps in menstrual health management. We have learnt to be committed, focused and humble. Brightening the hope of others s by taking action becomes a lifelong passion and leads to a happy life and hope to inspire others by setting an example. The biggest challenge is funding- we are ignored by donors who want to work with big organizations yet our skill is at grassroots. The most important SDG is Goal 3 - ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development.

During this pandemic we are conducting Public Service Announcements on our local ghetto community radio station as well as collaborating with other youths in the community to ensure everyone is sensitized on the dangers of COVID-19 and the risks of ignoring the Government’s directives on preventive measures like keeping 1.5m apart and the importance of hand sanitising. We have been able to procure masks, sanitizer and other protective gear for almost 100 homes and street families, with priority distribution to the under privileged, disabled and mothers and children. We also ensure as many community members as possible have access to clean water
